Third Thursday Newsletter: Issue 44

Dear Reader,

The 44th issue of the 3rd Thursday Newsletter finds us at the cusp of launching Voices of Tacoma: A Gathering of Poets. In addition to our official Launch at the Library, on Saturday, October 12, we also have a long list of events where you can come meet the poets and hear them read!

First, though, we are also excited to announce the launch of the Voices of Tacoma: A Podcast.  Produced by Phil Harty (who is a contributing poet to the anthology), the podcast currently includes a selection of poets who are reading their work. More podcasts will be coming soon!

Next week you will have an opportunity to check out Mauricio Robalino’s artwork, including the piece used for the book cover, Voices, at The Gallery at Tacoma Community College. The exhibit is on display from September 24 through October 25. Check the TCC Gallery website for hours and more details.

EVENTS

On Tuesday, September 24, in conjunction with the Tacoma Public Library’s Freedom To Read Week, Christina Vega and I will be facilitating a workshop entitled Banned Poetry & You. We’ll be looking at poetry through the ages and to the present that people don’t want you to read.  Reader discretion is advised: the material we will be covering may contain themes that some may find disturbing. We hope you enjoy it!  Moore Library • 6pm-7:30pm

On Tuesday, October 1, we’ll be at the Rusty Goat • 7pm-7:45pm, as part of the Creative Colloquy Crawl! Come listen to some of the poets from the anthology, including  Michael Haeflinger, Allen Braden, Christina Vega, Robert Lashley, and others!

On Wednesday, October 2, we’ll be celebrating the launch of the Tacoma Arts Month at Kaleidoscope! Come check out the event which includes the AMOCAT award presentation and a selection of artists. At the STAR Center • 6:30pm-9pm

Saturday, October 12 is the Official Launch at the Library • 11am-5pm! We’ll be at three of Tacoma’s Libraries, including Mottet (3523 E G St, 98404), South Tacoma (3411 S 56th St, 98409) and Fern Hill (765 S 84th St, 98444), with fifty poets reading their work and free activities for all ages! Copies of the book will be available for purchase so make sure to get a copy to have the poets sign! You will also be able to check out the book from the library (check in the stacks for Dewey Decimal number 811.6). Additionally, the library staff will have information on how to check out the podcasting equipment available from the library so you can create your own podcast!

Thursday, October 17 is the Official Launch at the Bookstore at King’s Books! Come to celebrate with the poets as they read their work and sign copies • 7pm-8:30pm

Wednesday, October 23 we’ll be continuing the celebrations with an Open House with the Poets at Swasey Library • 6pm-7:30pm. This will be another opportunity to come join the poets and hear them read!

If you can believe it, we’ll have more events in November and December - stay tuned for more information on those in the next Third Thursday Newsletter!
